Could intergalactic dust obscure a neutrino decay signature ?

چکیده
Following recent results from the Super-Kamiokande experiment which indicate that neutrinos may have finite masses and provide at least part of the dark matter in the Universe, we reexamine the decaying neutrino hypothesis of Sciama, including for the first time the effects of absorption by intergalactic dust. We consider several dust models, including one designed to optimize ultraviolet extinction for a given dust-togas ratio. Dust absorption is insufficient to reconcile the theory with observational upper limits on the intensity of the diffuse ultraviolet background reported recently by Murthy et al. The theory remains marginally compatible with other diffuse background measurements.

We quantify the consequences of intergalactic dust produced by the first Type II supernovae in the universe. The fraction of gas converted into stars is calibrated based on the observed C/H ratio in the intergalactic medium at z = 3, assuming a Scalo mass function for the stars. The associated dust absorbs starlight energy and emits it at longer wavelengths. For a uniform mix of metals and dust...

Recently Ménard et al. (hereafter MSFR) detected a subtle but systematic change in the mean color of quasars as a function of their projected separation from foreground galaxies, extending to comoving separations of ∼ 10h−1Mpc, which they interpret as a signature of reddening by intergalactic dust. We present theoretical models of this remarkable observation, using smoothed particle hydrodynami...
متن کاملNuclear-atomic state degeneracy in neutrinoless double-electron capture: A unique test for a Majorana-neutrino
There is a general consensus that detection of a double-beta decay without any neutrino involved would mark physics beyond the Standard Model. This is because in such decay modes lepton number conservation would be violated and the neutrino would reveal itself as being its own antiparticle. It is this particle-antiparticle duality which makes the neutrino of Majorana type. So far, the experimen...

We calculate the observable signatures of the rst generation of stars at high redshifts (5 < z < 10 3). We determine the cosmic star{formation history, using an extension of the Press{Schechter formalism for Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmologies, and calibrate the fraction of gas converted into stars so as to reproduce the C/H ratio observed in the intergalactic medium at z = 3. We nd that the Uni...
متن کاملThe SuperNEMO Experiment
Double beta decay is a rare nuclear process in which two neutrons in the same nucleus are spontaneously converted into two protons. This process occurs when normal beta decay is either forbidden or suppressed, and may happen in at least two different ways: by the emission of two electrons and two anti-electron neutrinos (already observed in many nuclei), or possibly by the emission of two elect...
